Over the past seasons Romford have been somewhat of a bogey team for Blues, so going into this fixture and aware Boro' were fighting for points this could have been a potential upset, but it was not to be when they blew their hosts away with this six goal demolition. It could have been seven had Kai Brown converted a second spot kick after he was brought down in the area. Jim Smith and Aron Gordon helped themselves to a brace apiece with David Knight and an own goal completing the tally. Smith has become an increasingly positive influence in the Blues engine room bringing to bear his vast experiencing from his football league days and throughout the ninety minutes he orchestrated play issuing instructions and capping it all off with two well taken goals. Boro' offered little other than youthful exuberance which sometimes bubbled over forcing the referee to intervene on a number of occasions, but Blues refused to be intimidated going on to register their biggest away win since Basildon United back in August. The win propelled them back into the play off places hot on the tails of teams above.
With the travelling Blues Choir backing them they were quickly into their stride and could have gone in front when Boro' custodian Joshua Blackburn made a hash of his clearance, Smith with a first time effort saw the ball slide wide with the keeper stranded.
The early signs were promising Blues pressurising the home goal , Brown had the beating of his marker on several occasions and one of many crosses forced Blackburn to fist clear under pressure. Knight then fed Brown taking a touch his shot beat Blackburn but missed the target.
Blues opener on 14 minutes was reward for their early pressure a poor clearance was seized on by Smith nodding the ball down and surging into the box he dispatched a low drive past Blackburn's despairing dive.
Romford responded well when Oluwatamilore Ogunn outpaced Ryan Sammons, his resultant shot took a deflection but that was all Boro' had to show for their efforts, being mainly employed with defensive duties.
Brown and Gordon were now seeing plenty of the ball on the flanks creating a catalogue of chances, Brown continued his duel with Blackburn testing him with a powerful shot well saved by the keeper, but he was beaten again when defensive naivety led to a second goal on 33 minutes. Brown was again involved picking up a loose ball in the area with his back to goal he was needlessly brought down, up stepped Knight to convert the spot kick sending Blackburn the wrong way.
In control bossing proceedings Blues were good value for their two goal advantage, Gordon weaved his way into the box testing Blackburn which forced the keeper to turn the ball behind, and then on the stroke of half time Brown cut inside dispatching a thunderous shot cannoning off the woodwork.
HT 0-2
Gordon was quickly in action again from the restart with a damaging run ending with a shot whistling over.
Blues taking their foot off the throttle momentarily allowed Boro' possession and territory and only a vital Danny Sambridge save from a Lewis Oweridu drive prevented them from reducing the arrears.
The near miss behind them Blues once again took control, Smith and Lewis Dark patrolling the middle of the park kept them in the ascendency protecting their two goal advantage. Inevitably they increased their lead on 64 minutes. Anointed Chukwu powered forward releasing Gordon out wide, he sent in a low cross causing panic resulting in Jamal Batchilly touching the ball past Blackburn to put Blues three up.
Three should have been four six minutes later when the ever menacing Brown was brought down in the box, regular penalty taker Knight picked the ball up but Brown insisted he take the kick which he did , but put the ball wide.
For Boro' it was a temporary reprieve when on 74 minutes Blues registered a fourth. Macca Joynes's cross was met by a cushioned Knight header to the unmarked Smith dispatching a crisp drive leaving Blackburn clutching at air.
Blues were now in total control employing their passing game to good effect, Knight set up sub Joe Paxman who came close to increasing the advantage, his shot narrowly going wide of the par post. Another clinical build up resulted in Blues fifth on 86 minutes Smith played a disguised ball into the path of sub Mitch Hahn, he struck first time the ball rebounding of the woodwork finding Gordon who made no mistake slamming the ball home.
Gordon was on the score sheet three minutes later and this was a goal started by a Sambridge long ball into the path of Joynes, he fed Paxman who spotting Gordon's run played the ball to him beating Blackburn at the near post to round off the scoring and secure Blue a well earned three points.
After a barren run over Xmas clearly the return of a number of players has had a rejuvenating consequence on Blues play they now need to build on this to put a run of results together and keep the pressure on team above them.
